Articles about custom furniture
Here we go through the questions people actually ask us during a measuring visit: what carcases and fronts are made of, which hardware survives ten years of daily use, how to plan the inside of a wardrobe, and what to measure at home before you call anyone out.
Who these texts are for
People order custom furniture once every ten or fifteen years, so they have nothing to compare it against: two similar-looking drawings can differ in hardware, carcase thickness and edging, and none of that shows on a drawing.
We write so that after reading you can ask any maker — not only us — three or four precise questions and get a real answer instead of general talk about quality.
A child's room
Build the carcase full size and fit only the parts you can later move.
Kitchen fronts
Finishes differ less in looks than in how they survive steam, sunlight and cleaning.
Kitchen hardware
Runners, hinges and dampers wear out first — and they are the least visible line in a quote.
Box room to walk-in
A box room becomes a walk-in from 1.2 m deep. Narrower than that and it is a wardrobe, not a room.
Custom or modular
Modules win in a simple room; building to size wins where the geometry is not square.
Edging and edges
Edging thickness depends not on budget but on whether anything knocks against that edge.
Wardrobe interiors
A wardrobe disappoints not because of its doors but because your things do not fit the way you live.
Kitchen lighting
A ceiling lamp does not light the worktop: you stand with your back to it. The light belongs under the wall units.
Narrow hallway
Keep at least 800 mm of route. Whatever is left is the depth your wardrobe can be.
Kitchen planning
Zone order matters more than kitchen shape: sink, prep, hob, in that sequence and one way.
Sliding or hinged
Sliders save floor space, hinged doors save depth and visibility. Whichever you have less of decides.
Drawers or shelves
In base units drawers beat shelves almost every time: a shelf is only visible at the front.
Kitchen worktops
Water, knives and a hot pan treat each worktop material very differently.
Living room furniture
The decision turns on one thing: how much closed volume the room needs and how much open.
Measuring a kitchen
Seven dimensions that are enough for a preliminary quote without a site visit.
