Kitchen hardware: where not to cut costs

Published

The first thing to fail in a kitchen is not the hob or the door front, it is the hardware: drawer runners and hinges are operated several times a day for ten years straight. That is why the specification should name the hardware manufacturer and the mechanism type, not simply say «hardware included».

What actually wears out

Count how many times a day the drawer under the sink is opened, then multiply by ten years. The rest of the kitchen just stands there.

Drawer runners

The hardest-working part of any kitchen. Roller runners are cheap, but within two or three years the drawer sags and starts catching on the one next to it. Full-extension ball-bearing runners carry the weight and let you reach everything at the back.

  • roller — only half the drawer is visible, sags under load
  • full-extension ball-bearing — the whole contents are visible
  • concealed with soft close — dearer, but quiet and sag-free

Door hinges

A hinge carries the weight of a door on two points. For a tall floor-to-ceiling front two hinges are not enough — three or four are needed, otherwise the door gradually stops closing square and a gap appears between fronts.

  • front up to 90 cm — two hinges
  • front above 120 cm — three or more
  • glass door — its own hinges, ordinary ones will not hold it

Wall unit lift systems

A gas strut or a mechanical lift on a wall unit is not a luxury but a convenience for a shorter person: the door stays open by itself instead of being held up with your head.

  • gas strut — smooth, but weakens over the years
  • mechanical — stiffer, but predictable

Three questions for the maker

These questions take five minutes and show whether your kitchen was costed or merely drawn.

  1. Who makes the hardware, and is it written in the specification

If the answer is «European» or «good quality», that is not an answer. The manufacturer belongs in the document, because that name is what later lets you buy an identical replacement part.

  2. How many hinges on each tall front

Hinges are the easiest place to save money invisibly: the difference in the quote is small, while a door that hangs crooked after three years is visible every day.

  3. What happens when a part breaks in three years

This is not a question about the warranty but about availability: hardware from a known manufacturer is sold in any town, unbranded hardware only where somebody once bought it in bulk.

Where saving money makes sense

There are places where expensive hardware genuinely changes nothing. A cabinet housing built-in appliances is opened once a year, so a soft-close damper there is wasted. The same goes for a low drawer holding baking trays: it moves rarely and carries little weight.

Everything around the sink, the waste bin, cutlery and everyday crockery, however, is the working zone — and there a cheap runner will spoil how the kitchen feels faster than anything else.

The short answers

Can hardware be replaced later without rebuilding the kitchen?

Hinges and lift systems can, because they mount on the same fixing points. Runners depend on the type: roller and ball-bearing runners mount differently, and concealed runners need a different drawer box altogether. So runners are best chosen at the start.

Does every door need a soft-close damper?

No. A damper matters where doors are shut often and in a hurry: under the sink, under the hob, in the wall units above the worktop. On a crockery cupboard opened once a week it changes nothing except the quote.

How do I tell good hardware during a measuring visit?

Ask to see a sample and pull the drawer fully out with one hand. A full-extension ball-bearing runner travels straight and steady to the very end; a roller runner drops on the last few centimetres and wobbles up and down.
