Custom furniture or flat-pack modules
Published
The difference is not quality but geometry: modular furniture is built around standard 60, 80 and 100 cm widths, so in a square room with true corners it fits well and costs less. Where there is an alcove, a sloped ceiling, a pipe, an uneven ceiling line or a non-standard depth, modules leave voids — and those voids are exactly what building to size buys back.
When modular furniture is the right answer
If the wall is straight, the corners are near enough square, the ceiling is an ordinary height and what you need is simply a wardrobe, modules will reach the same result faster and for less. That is a legitimate choice, and there is no sense talking anyone out of it without a reason.
Modules also win when the home is temporary: furniture built for particular walls becomes furniture built for the wrong walls after a move, whereas a module can be taken apart and arranged differently.
Where modules lose
Four situations where the difference shows up not in the quote but in square metres of usable space.
A high ceiling
A module stops at its standard height, leaving half a metre above it that only collects dust. A floor-to-ceiling wardrobe turns that space into seasonal storage and removes the top surface entirely.
Alcoves, slopes, pipework
Modular logic fills an alcove with the nearest smaller module and leaves the remainder as a gap. A carcase built to size simply follows the geometry, and there is no gap to fill.
Non-standard depth
A 60 cm wardrobe will not fit a narrow hallway, and 45 cm is rare among modules. A wardrobe built to 40 cm keeps the passage clear while still hanging clothes lengthways.
Kitchen corners
The corner is the most expensive space in any kitchen. A modular corner nearly always leaves a dead triangle behind it; built to size, that volume is reclaimed with a carousel mechanism or simply by building a different carcase.
How to decide in ten minutes
Put a tape on the wall and look at the corners
If the length at the top and the bottom agree within a centimetre and the corners look square, modules will fit fine. If the difference is larger, a module will either not go in or will leave a gap that has to be covered with something.
Count the space you are losing
The void above the wardrobe, the gap at the side and the dead corner are square metres you already paid for when you bought the home. If there are many of them, building to size pays for itself in space rather than in looks.
Think about how long this is for
Furniture in a rented flat and furniture in your own are different decisions. Building to size belongs where you intend to stay, because that is where a reclaimed metre works for you every day.
The short answers
Is custom furniture always dearer than modular?
For the same materials, usually yes, because it is work for one specific size rather than a production run. But the fair comparison is not the price of the carcase but the price of the result: a module plus an added filler panel, plus a covered gap, plus the unused space above it sometimes comes to more than a single piece built to fit.
Can the two be combined — some modular, some custom?
Yes, and it is a sensible common approach. Modules cover the long straight wall while the awkward part — an alcove, a corner, a narrow passage — is built to size. The thing to get right is matching the material and colour, so bring a sample of whatever is already bought.
Will custom furniture survive a move?
A wardrobe or kitchen built for particular walls almost always needs reworking in a new place: the heights, corners and service positions are different. So building to size suits a home you plan to stay in, while for a temporary one it is better to buy what dismantles and reassembles.
