Laminated board or MDF: what to choose
The short answer: the carcass is almost always laminated chipboard, and MDF is used for fronts when you need routing, a radius or a single paint colour. Neither is the "better" board — they are different boards for different parts, and making everything from one of them costs more for no gain.
Different materials for different parts
Laminated chipboard is wood chip pressed with resin under a decorative film. The board is stable, holds confirmat and minifix fixings, costs less and comes in a large range of decors. Its weak point is the cut edge: the board itself is porous, so every exposed edge has to be covered with edging.
MDF is fine wood fibre pressed more densely and evenly. That is why it can be cut to a profile: routing, curved radius shapes, chamfers. It is painted or film-wrapped, and the colour comes out even, with no visible edging joint. It costs more and weighs more.
Hence the division: the load-bearing box is laminated board, because what it owes you is stability and a firm grip on fixings; a visible shaped front is MDF, because what it owes you is the shape.
Where each one goes
Carcass
Laminated board, 18 mm. It carries the weight, holds the fixings and does not warp. A carcass in MDF is possible, but it costs more and weighs more, and inside a wardrobe you will see no difference.
Fronts
Laminated board if the shape is flat: cheaper, with a wider choice of decors. MDF if you need routing, a radius, a chamfer, or one even colour with no edging around the perimeter.
Wet areas
Under the sink, next to the dishwasher, in a boiler room, on a veranda. Here it is not the type of board that decides, but two other things.
- moisture-resistant board instead of standard
- edging on every side, hidden ones included
- a sealed joint between worktop and wall
Edging
PVC, 0.8–2 mm. This is the detail that kills furniture earlier than any material does: wherever edging is missing or has lifted, the board takes up water and swells. Thicker edging on outer corners survives vacuum cleaners and shoes.
What actually decides how long furniture lasts
Not the type of board. Carefully made laminated-board furniture lasts for decades, while expensive painted MDF on badly set hinges starts to catch within a year.
Four things decide it: edging on every part, tight joints with no gaps, ventilation and dryness around the sink, and hardware that carries the weight. None of that shows in a photo or in a price list — which is why "board or MDF" is often not the first question worth asking.
The short answers
Is laminated chipboard harmful?
The board carries a formaldehyde emission class declared by its maker, and an edge covered with edging reduces that emission further. We state the class and the board maker for your order in the drawing — this is not something to take on anyone's word.
Is laminated board afraid of water?
It is not the board that is vulnerable, it is the exposed cut. A puddle on an edged surface does nothing; the same puddle on an unedged edge under the sink gives you a swollen corner within months. That is why in wet areas we edge every side, including the ones nobody sees.
Can everything be made from MDF?
It can, but there is little point: an MDF carcass costs more and weighs more, and what MDF is good at — shape and paint — is not needed inside a wardrobe. That money is better spent on hardware and edging.
